Unlimited Resources

We humans need motivation to work. This comes from the desire for recognition, money or power. These motivations provide us with reward in terms of money, recognition or power. As described in the post 'Failure of Success', these sources of motivation are limited. They are limited in the sense that everybody cannot have the reward, for example everybody cannot get recognition, as then it will stop being recognition. Thus we will call these resources ‘limited resourced’ due to their limited nature.

If motivation could be unlimited, then capitalism can be done with (as the main advantage of capitalism is its capability to motivate people to work), and we can (hopefully) live in greater equality. Of course we do not desire complete equality (the main flaw in socialism), but very slight ranking in terms of merit. Currently for example, I can earn 10 - 20 times more that an equally talented and hard working person who is not so fortunate as I. So it would remove the inequality borne from birth. However if a system can function where complete equality exists, then it will probably be the best system mankind can have. Thus we need some sort of motivation which is unlimited, which we will prove exists.

For proving the existence of such ‘unlimited resources’, we need to assume that humanity is not doomed. This is a reasonable enough assumption, because if humanity is doomed then we cannot do it any harm.

Now let us assume for a moment that ‘unlimited resources’ do not exist, and only the limited ones do. Then according to the logic given in ‘Failure of Success’ blog post, everybody cannot be happy and successful at the same time; someone has to be suppressed and exploited. History shows that when such a situation exists, there will invariably be a rebellion (which is also a problem with capitalism). And such repeated rebellions will eventually destroy us. This contradicts with our assumption that humanity is not doomed. Therefore ‘unlimited resources’ exist.

Now, having proved that unlimited resources exist, let us look at what they might be.

1. One resource that I think could be an unlimited resource is human curiosity. It is human nature to be curious (as we see in children before going to school). This curiosity can be used as an unlimited resource for motivating research. This motivation is already being used in science, but it is now getting affected by capitalism, where people fight for credit and sell the credit for money.

2. The joy of doing something you like can also be used as an unlimited resource for motivating innovation and art. Thus people can be left to whatever they like and create marvels.

But what about the necessities of life like growing food and building shelter? There does not seem any method to motivate people to perform these activities. But with improving technology, it might be possible that robots can be developed enough to take on such tasks, and leave humans free for things that they do best.
